Phillip is the youngest in the Levin family whose innocent curiosity is met with growing anxiety in a world that seems to be collapsing around him, both at home and in the streets.

Herman is Bess’ husband and an insurance agent who tries to maintain a sense of normalcy in his family and friends lives — even as his country seems to be slipping into fascism, anti-Semitism and xenophobic isolationism.

Alvin is Herman’s angry and intelligent orphaned nephew. His political differences with his family, personal grudges and resentments, as well as an abhorrence of hypocrisy, drive him from street crime to the battlefields of Europe and back.
